What is Jeera Pyaaz Rice?
Jeera pyaaz rice is a simple Indian basmati rice dish cooked with cumin seeds and sliced onions for a light, fragrant one-pot meal. I call it basmati rice pulao, but you can make it using any variety of rice you prefer . Please ensure cooking times and rice to water ratios as per the rice quality you are using.
This jeera pyaaz wale chawal sits somewhere between a simple jeera rice and a light pulao, making it incredibly versatile .You can keep it minimal or build it into a complete meal with simple accompaniments and variations suggested later in this post.
Ingredients
Basmati rice, rinsed and soaked 15 minutes. Soaking is optional , but pre soaked rice takes less time to cook .
A medium onion, thinly sliced
Whole Jeera (cumin seeds)
Ghee or oil– I mostly cook this rice recipe with ghee but sometimes i use Olive oil, or avocado oil. Though ghee gives the most authentic, nutty depth, the recipe works beautifully with oil too.
You can also use butter to make it more rich flavourful just like restaurant style jeera rice pulao.
Salt, to taste. I also like adding a bit of black pepper powder sometimes for favour.
Red chilli powder (adjust to taste)
Water (double the rice) – The
1–2 tsp lemon juice (optional but recommended)
Fresh coriander leaves – This is optional . If you have the fresh coriander leaves sprinkle it at the end for garnishing, it adds so much freshness and flavour.
Optional whole Spices– As this is jeera rice, jeera is mandatory but you can add more spices if you prefer to make the rice more flavourful. Saute whole spices like bay leaf , Cinnamon stick, whole black peppers, star anise, cloves, Badi elaichi (Brown Cardamom) along with ghee/ oil to get the perfect wholesome flavours .

Rice to Water Ratio for cooking rice

Add jeera and sauté until aromatic. It takes 1-2 minutes.

Add salt and red chilli powder.
Pour in 2 cups water and stir once.
Add a small squeeze of lemon juice.Combine everything well. Taste test the water with a spoon to check the seasoning. Adjust is required.
Cover and cook on low for 10-12 minutes. You will know its done, if you check 2-3 strands of rice and it is tender and soft and breaks easily.

This is where this rice dish really shines. This rice recipe perfect on its own with a dollop of butter / ghee or a drizzle of mustard oil. It goes great with a simple side of mango chutney , gooseberry pickle or green chilli and garlic pickle and salad.
Pyaaz and Jeera rice pairs beautifully with so many things.
We love it with:
- easy chana masala or Kale chane curry for a wholesome, protein-rich meal
- comforting rajma recipe on cosy days
- A bowl of homemade raita and fresh beetroot and chana salad for something light
- Karonde mirchi , dahi lassi and pickled onions for that spicy yet simple lunch in summers.

Tips for making Perfect Jeera Rice
- Rinse rice well at least 4-5 times , until water runs clear
- Don’t over-stir while cooking
- Keep onions soft, not browned
- Let the rice rest before fluffing
- Adding lemon juice ensures the rice stays fluffy and the grains are seperate. It does not impact the taste.
Storage & Reheating
- Any rice dish is best enjoyed fresh for perfect taste and texture, however you can store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours
- Reheat in microwave with a splash of water
- I would not recommend freezing Jeera Rice.
As Jeera pyaaz rice is a simple and quick one pan dish you can always make it fresh . This is my backup meal for the days when i do not want to spend too much time in the kitchen cooking and washing up dishes.
Variations You Can Try
This jeera pyaaz rice has always been a family favourite, our go to way of turning simple rice into something special. My mum often cooks this it to serve alongside everyday sabzis , rajma, chhole and dals, and now it’s something I find myself making just as often.

FAQ’s
Sure you can use any variety of rice. However basmati gives the best long, fluffy texture for this recipe.
It’s a simpler version , consider this as a minimal cumin onion pulao recipe. It is simpler and required just the basic ingredients. Also ypu do not need to add all the spices to make this as rich as a pulao.
Yes this recipe is vegan if you use oil instead of ghee.
Yes, it reheats well and makes a great quick lunch. However like any rice recipe , refrigerate it properly and use this within 1-2 days of preparing.
If you add too much water or have not rinsed the rice enough it can make rice sticky and clumpy. Also overcooking can cause this issue.
I never cook any grains, rice without rinsing it thoroughly.
Whenever rice or any grains are processed and packaged, they are coated with surface starch. If you cook it without rinsing properly, that starch releases into the water and makes them sticky, clumpy and sometimes slightly gummy instead of fluffy
Rinsing removes this excess starch so you get separate, light grains — exactly what you want for dishes like steamed rice, jeera pyaaz rice , pulao or biryani.
