Homemade Pumpkin spice hot chocolate

If you’ve ever tried the Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate from Starbucks or PSL or fancy festive hot chocolates and lattes from any cafe, you’ll know how cozy and festive it tastes. But here’s the good news — you can easily recreate it at home with this recipe.

The Starbucks version is made with steamed milk, mocha sauce, pumpkin spice sauce, and whipped cream topped with pumpkin pie spice. It’s delicious, but it can be very sweet and heavy on syrups.

This homemade festive pumpkin hot chocolate recipe is:

  • Made with real pumpkin puree and homemade pumpkin pie spice with real warming seasonal spices (not just syrup)
  • Customizable — adjust sweetness, spice level, and chocolate to your taste
  • Fresher and healthier — not laden with artificial flavors or syrups
  • More budget-friendly — one big batch of this seasonal hot chocolate at home costs less than a single cup from Starbucks
  • You can make it extra thick and indulgent—just like Italian hot chocolate—with one simple staple ingredient.

So if you love Starbucks’ fall drinks (I personally love them as a special treat) , this recipe gives you the same cozy vibes with cleaner, simpler ingredients. You can make this creamy and cozy pumpkin spice hot chocolate with real pumpkin, homemade pumpkin pie spice, and cocoa or dark chocolate.

FAQ’s

Can I use pumpkin pie filling instead of pumpkin puree?

It’s best to use plain pumpkin puree. Pumpkin pie filling already has sugar and spices, which could make your drink overly sweet or overpowering.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes! Make a larger batch, keep it in the fridge for up to 2 days, and reheat on the stovetop. Just whisk well before serving.

Can I make this with real chocolate instead of cocoa powder?

Yes! Chopped dark chocolate (60–70% cocoa) melts beautifully into the milk and gives a rich, decadent hot chocolate. Just whisk well until smooth.

What’s the difference between cacao and cocoa powder in hot chocolate?

Cocoa is processed and milder, while raw cacao is less processed, more bitter, and packed with antioxidants. Both work — it depends on your taste preference.
