The perfect Spice blend for Fall- Homemade pumpkin pie spice
Fall is my favorite time of the year! There’s something magical about the crisp air, colorful leaves, and cozy sweaters.
But being a foodie what I love most is the explosion of fall flavours in the kitchen. Whether it’s a warm pumpkin pie spice latte or a batch of pumpkin spice pancakes, autumn brings with it a sense of comfort, and at the heart of it all is one key ingredient: pumpkin pie spice .
This magical spice blend elevates everything from sweet desserts to savory dishes, filling your home with the irresistible aroma of fall.
The best part of fall for me is the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte! There’s something about that first sip of pumpkin-spiced goodness that signals the official start of autumn. The warmth, the comforting spices, and the hint of sweetness—it’s the perfect way to celebrate this season.
As much as I love grabbing a PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte) from Starbucks, I now love creating my own pumpkin pie spice blend at home. Having this homemade spice mix on hand allows me to recreate that signature fall flavor in a variety of dishes, from sweet to savory.
For me pumpkin pie spice is the star of every autumn-inspired recipe. Whether it’s pumpkin pie spice syrup for my morning coffee or i’m baking pumpkin pie spice cookies, this blend brings the essence of fall into every bite.
It is also incredibly versatile. You can use it in pumpkin pie spice almonds for a crunchy snack or whip up pumpkin pie spice butter to spread on warm toast. And not to forget, it is the perfect secret ingredient for pumpkin pie spice pancakes or waffles on a chilly weekend morning!

What Is Pumpkin Pie Spice?
Pumpkin pie spice is a delicious blend of warming spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and allspice. All of these warm spices blended together, evoke the essence of fall.
It is the magic behind that pumpkin pie you crave during Thanksgiving, but it can do so much more than just flavor pies.
Pumpkin spice mix complements the natural sweetness of pumpkin, though it’s used in a wide range of dishes beyond just pie. The blend typically contains the below spices:
- Cinnamon: Adds warmth and sweetness.
- Nutmeg: Contributes a rich, nutty, and slightly sweet flavor.
- Ginger: Brings a bit of spiciness and heat.
- Cloves: Provides a strong, aromatic depth.
- Allspice: A spice made from the dried berries of the allspice tree. Though its flavour reminds you of a mix of cinnamon, cloves, pepper and nutmeg. You can have your own all spice plant. My dad has got one.
When mixed together these spices create the familiar “pumpkin spice” flavor that has become synonymous with fall. It’s most famously used in pumpkin pie, but it is now popular in beverages (like the Pumpkin Spice Lattes), baked goods (pumpkin spice cookies, muffins), and even savoury dishes.
Pumpkin spice doesn’t contain actual pumpkin—its purpose is to enhance the taste of pumpkin and other fall recipes.
You can sprinkle it over your morning oatmeal, stir it into yogurt, or even blend it into savory dishes for a hint of autumn warmth.I add a tablespoon of this to my healthy homemade granola recipe, and it adds a very delicious flavour to my breakfast granola.
I love experimenting with it in everything from pumpkin pie spice cookies to spiced syrups for my morning coffee.

Why Make Your Own Pumpkin Pie Spice?
I love making my own pumpkin spice blend at home as it allows me to control the balance of flavors and it is much more cost-effective.
I usually make a big batch of this blend at the start of fall so I’m always ready to whip up my favorite pumpkin pie spice recipes like pumpkin spice butter, pumpkin pie spice syrup for lattes, pumpkin spiced nuts or even roasted veggies with a touch of fall flavor.
By making your own pumpkin spice, you can also ensure that the spices are as fresh and fragrant as possible, leading to a more flavorful result.
Pre-made pumpkin pie spice blends can be more expensive than buying the individual spices in bulk. By making your own, you save money, especially if you already have most of the spices in your pantry.

- Add more Cinnamon for Warmth: If you love the sweet, warming flavor of cinnamon, you can increase the amount. Though this recipe has more cinnamon as i love the warmth of it , you can still increase the quantity to suit your taste.

- Omit the spice:If there’s a spice in the blend that you don’t enjoy, you can simply omit it
- Add Cardamom for a Unique Twist : Try adding ground cardamom to the pumpkin spice blend. It adds a very fragrant edge to the spice mix. I love adding cardamom to my coffee too.
- Replace Nutmeg with Mace: If you find nutmeg too strong , replace it with Mace (Javitri) for a more delicate but similar flavor similar.
- Add a Pinch of Black Pepper: For a little extra kick and warmth, add a pinch of black pepper to your spice mix. It complements the sweetness of cinnamon and ginger really well.
