Healthy Berry and Apple smoothie

Some recipes become favourites because they’re quick. Others because they’re healthy. This apple berry smoothie manages to be both.

It’s one of those recipes I reach for on busy mornings when breakfast needs to happen fast but I still want something nourishing. The sweet apple, tart berries and creamy yogurt blend into a smoothie that’s naturally delicious without needing lots of added sugar. A little fresh ginger gives it a gentle warmth, while flaxseed and peanut butter make it more satisfying and keep you fuller for longer.

One thing I especially love about this smoothie is how adaptable it is. During summer, when British gooseberries are in season, I often throw in a handful for their bright, tangy flavour. The rest of the year, frozen mixed berries work beautifully, making this a recipe you can enjoy any time.

Whether you’re making breakfast before work, looking for a healthy snack, or need a quick post-workout smoothie, this recipe comes together in just minutes with simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

Ingredients required for berries and apple smoothie

If you do not like apples this smoothie is the perfect way to add apples to your diet. This is a healthy combination of apples, a few fresh strawberries(or use frozen strawberries) ,few gooseberries(these are available in summers in England and are so so good for your immune system, so do add these to your diet).

Other things that I added are carrot, ginger slice, peanut butter for the fat and protein(this can be replaced with a few soaked almonds),greek yoghurt (omit this if using nut milk), flaxseeds and honey for sweetness.

If you think honey is not required as the fruits have their own sweetness, you can omit it.

How to Make Apple Berry Smoothie

This healthy apple smoothie comes together in just 5 minutes. Simply prep your ingredients, blend until smooth, and enjoy a refreshing breakfast or snack.

Prepare the apple smoothie ingredients– Wash the apple, gooseberries and carrot thoroughly. Core the apple and roughly chop it into chunks. Peel the carrot if preferred and cut it into smaller pieces. Peel a small piece of fresh ginger.

Add everything to the blender- Add the chopped apple, frozen strawberries, gooseberries, carrot, fresh ginger, Greek yogurt, peanut butter (if using), flaxseeds and water to a high-speed blender.

Drizzle in honey according to your preferred sweetness. Since apples and strawberries are naturally sweet, you may find you need very little or no honey at all.

Blend until smooth-Blend on high speed for about 45-60 seconds, or until the smoothie is completely smooth and creamy. If the smoothie feels too thick, add a little more water and blend again until you reach your desired consistency.

Taste and adjust-Give the smoothie a quick taste before serving. Add a little extra honey if you’d like it sweeter or a splash of water if you prefer a thinner drink.

Serve immediately- Pour into your favourite smoothie glass and enjoy straight away while it’s fresh and chilled. Garnish with a few fresh berries, apple slices or a sprinkle of ground flaxseed if you like.

Instructions

  • Prepare the apple smoothie ingredients-Wash the apple, gooseberries and carrot thoroughly. Core the apple and roughly chop it into chunks. Peel the carrot if preferred and cut it into smaller pieces. Peel a small piece of fresh ginger.
If you're using fresh strawberries instead of frozen, add a few ice cubes to achieve the same chilled, thick texture.
  • Add everything to the blender-Add the chopped apple, frozen strawberries, gooseberries, carrot, fresh ginger, Greek yogurt, peanut butter (if using), flaxseeds and water to a high-speed blender.
  • Drizzle in honey according to your preferred sweetness. Since apples and strawberries are naturally sweet, you may find you need very little or no honey at all.

Expert Tips

  • Frozen strawberries create the best texture. They make the smoothie naturally thick and cold without watering it down with too much ice.
  • Adjust the consistency to suit your preference. Add extra water for a lighter smoothie or reduce the water for a thicker, spoonable smoothie.
  • Use sweet apples for a naturally sweeter smoothie. Gala apples, Fuji, Honeycrisp and Pink Lady apples are excellent choices for this apple smoothie.
  • Don’t skip the ginger. A small piece adds a fresh, subtle warmth that complements the fruit beautifully without overpowering it.
  • Blend the carrot well. A high-speed blender gives the smoothest texture. If your blender isn’t very powerful, grate the carrot first.
  • Enjoy immediately. Fresh smoothies taste best straight after blending, when the colour and flavour are at their brightest.
  • I love keeping bags of frozen fruits especially strawberries in my freezer because they make smoothies thick, creamy and perfectly chilled all year round. During the short British gooseberry season, I freeze a few batches so I can continue making this smoothie long after summer has passed.

Variations

One of my favourite things about this apple berry smoothie is how easy it is to customise with whatever you have on hand.

Make it vegan-Swap the Greek yogurt for your favourite dairy-free yogurt and use maple syrup instead of honey.

Add more protein– Blend in a scoop of vanilla protein powder or a little extra Greek yogurt for a more filling breakfast or post-workout smoothie.

Make it dairy-free-Replace the Greek yogurt with coconut, almond or oat yogurt.

Try different berries-No gooseberries? You can totally skip gooseberries if you don’t have them. Use raspberries, blueberries, blackberries or a frozen mixed berry blend instead.

Add leafy greens-A handful of baby spinach blends in beautifully and adds extra nutrients without changing the flavour too much.

Boost the healthy fats-Add chia seeds, hemp hearts or extra flaxseed for even more fibre and healthy fats.

Storage Tips

This smoothie is best enjoyed fresh immediately after blending.

If you have leftovers, pour them into an airtight jar or bottle and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Give it a good shake or stir before drinking, as natural separation is completely normal.

For meal prep, freeze the chopped fruit and vegetables in individual freezer bags. When you’re ready to make a smoothie, simply empty a bag into the blender, add the yogurt, water and honey, then blend.

Yes! Frozen berries are actually my preferred choice because they create a thicker, creamier smoothie without needing lots of ice.

Sweet apple varieties like Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp and Pink Lady apples are perfect for this berry and apple smoothie. If you enjoy a tangier flavour, green apples or Granny Smith apples are an option too.
